Responsibilities of Doctors

Imagine you are a doctor. You’ve worked hard for many years at completing your extensive schooling, and now it’s time to embark down the large path that is your career journey. Now, I know you’re here because you’d like to know what the doctor’s daily routine is like, right? It’s time to break that down into a list, and then we will go into some detail.

What Does A Doctor Do On A Daily Basis:

  • Keep up with current medical climate changes and research
  • Prescribe medication to patients
  • Collaborate with other healthcare professionals like registered nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants to complete tasks
  • Prescribe and administer patient treatment
  • Assess symptoms
  • Diagnose conditions
  • Follow up with patients, refer them to more specialized providers, and examine and relay their testing results from the laboratory

Life of a Physician:

There are many different kinds of physicians, so the day-to-day life of one differs depending on what role they fill and what kind of physician they are. Other names for them are medical doctors (M.D.) or doctors of osteopathic medicine (D.O.).

Both use normalized treatment methods such as prescribing drugs and scheduling surgeries. However, D.O.s in particular emphasize work on the body’s musculoskeletal system, preventative medicine, and holistic patient care. They can be primary care physicians or specialize in a specific niche like mentioned above.

List of most in-demand doctor specialties:

  • Internal Medicine
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Neurology
  • Pediatrics
  • Psychiatry
  • Geriatrics
  • Endocrinology
  • Anesthesiology
  • Ophthalmology

This position is more demanding than most other professions. As a healthcare provider, you are responsible for their patients’ well being. You are also communicating with these patients when they are at their most vulnerable. You need a strong knowledge of everything medicine, and need to be able to communicate that knowledge to patients in layman's terms.

Commonly asked questions about the life of a doctor in the USA:

What is the average annual salary of a doctor?

plant and money signifying how doctors help life and get paid to do so

Depends on the specialty, really. The average salaries for some major specialties are as follows:

  • Pediatricians, general: $184,410
  • Internists, general: $201,440
  • Physicians and surgeons: $203,450
  • Family and general practitioners: $213,270
  • Psychiatrists: $220,430
  • Obstetricians and Gynecologists: $233,610
  • Surgeons: $252,040
  • Anesthesiologists: $261,730

How busy are doctors?

On average, physicians are incredibly busy, especially early in their careers. Much of this depends on what branch of medicine you work in. Busy branches: emergency (medicine, surgery, ob/gyn, orthopedics) carry 36 hour shifts in hospitals. Less busy branches: non-emergency (psychiatry, psychiatry, etcetera). The reason for the busy branches being so busy is because government hospitals are typically very overburdened in emergency branches, as there is not enough staff to assist patients adequately. At private hospitals and organizations, you can have fixed working hours that allow for a higher degree of work life balance. The location is also relevant to this because if you work in a smaller town and less populated area, there will be less people to fill the hospital.

Questions to ask a doctor about their job:

  • Why did you go into medicine?
  • Can you tell me about this medical institution?
  • What is the typical schedule like?
  • How many patients do you see in a day?
  • What are the ultimate goals of this medical institution?

If you are ever curious about what a doctor does on their day-to-day, just ask them some of these questions, if they seem open to it!
